Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma led a series of top-level review sessions with various departments to evaluate ongoing development projects, focusing on urban infrastructure, mobility, and sustainable growth in Shillong. The meetings, held at the State Guest House in Taraghar, were attended by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, Chief Secretary Shakil P. Ahammed, Tourism Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Kumar D., and other senior officials.
Urban redevelopment was highlighted as a key priority, with the Chief Minister emphasizing the need for projects to enhance public value, stimulate economic activity, and ensure long-term sustainability. He urged the exploration of innovative approaches, such as public-private partnerships, and instructed departments to carefully assess concession options before utilizing public funds.
Efficient land use was underscored as crucial, with a call to transform key urban areas into vibrant commercial and public centers. Connectivity and mobility were identified as essential facilitators, with Sangma focusing on enhancing last-mile connectivity through the Meghalaya Transport Corporation and suggesting initial measures to promote public transport usage.
The Forest and Environment Department’s performance was also scrutinized, with a directive from the Chief Minister to achieve measurable outcomes within three to six months. Discussions revolved around wildlife conservation, addressing human-animal conflicts, strengthening forest management, and combating illegal activities like mining and smuggling. Emphasis was placed on leveraging technology and promoting eco-tourism through effective management and public-private partnerships.
In the cultural domain, a proposal was made for a comprehensive study involving Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo research groups to document the region’s historical and heritage aspects. Sangma also assessed plans for developing the agarwood and essential oils sector, including the establishment of a Center of Excellence to enhance farmers’ livelihoods, employment opportunities, and exports.
Preparations for the National Games 2027 were reviewed, with a focus on timely infrastructure completion and athlete readiness, as more than 1,200 athletes are currently undergoing training. Cleanliness and waste management initiatives, including bio-remediation at the Marten landfill, were also discussed, with the Chief Minister stressing the importance of community involvement and results-oriented governance throughout Meghalaya.
