Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma emphasized the crucial need for a shift in mindset within society, highlighting the importance of inclusivity towards individuals with special needs. Speaking at the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Montfort Teacher Training College for Special Education in Tura, Sangma praised the institution for its 25-year commitment to fostering inclusive education in the North East.

Sangma commended the pioneering efforts of the college, noting its establishment at a time when there was a lack of specialized special education training institutes in the region. He lauded Montfort’s vision and perseverance, recognizing its role in laying the groundwork for similar institutions in the area. The Chief Minister stressed the significance of not allowing physical conditions, personal challenges, or economic backgrounds to dictate how individuals are treated, emphasizing the core values of dignity and equality in a progressive society.

Highlighting the government’s MOTHERS program (Meghalaya Outcome Transformation in Health, Education, Rural Development, and Social Welfare), Sangma underscored its comprehensive approach with a focus on empowering mothers for grassroots transformation. He acknowledged the longstanding practice of holistic models by faith-based organizations, particularly the Church, in community engagement efforts. Sangma called for collaborative efforts among stakeholders, emphasizing the shared objective of societal welfare despite differences in systems and roles.
