The Ministry of Coal has launched the Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects with a financial outlay of Rs 37,500 crore. This initiative aims to boost surface coal and lignite gasification projects to increase value addition and reduce import reliance in India’s energy and chemical sectors. Guidelines for the scheme were issued on June 25, followed by the Request for Proposal (RFP) on July 7 for eligible applicants to submit proposals.
To ensure stakeholder engagement and clarity on the scheme provisions, the Ministry will conduct a pre-application conference on July 20. Interested parties are encouraged to participate in the conference and seek clarification by submitting their queries. The deadline for application submission is September 7.
Coal gasification technology transforms coal into synthesis gas (syngas) for producing various value-added products like methanol, ammonium nitrate, and industrial chemicals. The government has been promoting coal gasification to enhance energy security, reduce import dependence, and diversify the use of domestic coal resources.
Roadshows on coal gasification were conducted in Delhi and Hyderabad in June to discuss policy support, technological innovations, investment opportunities, and project implementation strategies. These initiatives aim to accelerate the development of coal and lignite gasification projects nationwide by bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, technology providers, and investors.
