Mizoram Police confiscated a significant amount of methamphetamine tablets valued at more than Rs 19.21 crore and apprehended two alleged drug traffickers from Manipur. The seizure occurred when a white car traveling from Manipur to Aizawl was stopped and searched near Keifang junction in Saitual district. Authorities discovered 2.02 lakh methamphetamine tablets, weighing 24.016 kg, hidden in the vehicle, with an estimated market value exceeding Rs 19.21 crore.
The drugs were cleverly concealed in various parts of the car, including the spare tire compartment and the mudguard area, wrapped in black polythene sheets. The suspects, Th. Onkhothang Haokip (33) and Mathew (46) from Chandel and Churachandpur districts of Manipur, were found in possession of the contraband and were promptly arrested. A case has been filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, with investigations ongoing.
Mizoram has become a key route for drug trafficking in Northeast India due to its porous borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. Methamphetamine tablets, also known as Yaba or “party tablets,” are frequently smuggled from Myanmar into Mizoram. These tablets, containing a mix of methamphetamine and caffeine, are highly addictive and illegal in India. The state has seen a rise in drug smuggling activities, particularly through districts like Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
