Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur acknowledged that their mistakes in the batting powerplay and fielding were costly in their defeat against UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026. Despite aiming to chase a target of 187 runs as a team, Mumbai failed to execute their plan effectively.
Harmanpreet highlighted the recurring issue of slow starts in the powerplay, emphasizing the need for a more positive mindset at the beginning of matches. She noted that a weak start puts immense pressure on the middle and lower order, impacting the team’s overall performance.
The skipper pointed out missed opportunities in the field, especially during the partnership between Meg Lanning and Phoebe Litchfield, which set the stage for UP Warriorz’ formidable total. Harmanpreet stressed the importance of capitalizing on chances at this level to avoid being under pressure.
Despite a valiant effort from players like Amelia Kerr and Amanjot Kaur, Mumbai’s chase lacked momentum. Kerr’s quick 49 off 28 balls and Amanjot’s 41 off 24 deliveries provided a glimmer of hope, but Mumbai fell short. Harmanpreet commended their contributions and expressed hope for their continued performance.
Harmanpreet also praised young wicketkeeper Gunalan Kamalini for her impressive performance behind the stumps, highlighting her significance to the team. She discussed the challenges faced in finding the right team balance due to early disruptions but expressed optimism about settling on the best playing XI and opening pair.
Despite the defeat, Harmanpreet remained positive about Mumbai Indians’ potential, emphasizing the need to minimize errors for future victories. She viewed the loss as a learning opportunity and expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities moving forward.
