NCP Working President Praful Patel clarified the party’s position on allegations against numerologist Ashok Kharat. Patel stated that a thorough investigation is ongoing, and strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty, regardless of their status. The case has caused a stir in Maharashtra’s political circles as it emerged that several prominent leaders sought astrological advice from Kharat.
The controversy escalated with the circulation of photos showing Rupali Chakankar, Chairperson of the State Commission for Women, engaging in various acts of reverence towards Kharat. These images have sparked outrage, leading to demands for Chakankar’s resignation. Patel, addressing the media, emphasized that the NCP would not protect anyone involved. He assured that appropriate measures would be taken within the next 48 hours based on the investigation’s outcomes.
The scandal unfolded after a woman lodged a formal complaint at the Sarkarwada Police Station. Ashok Kharat, based in Sinnar, allegedly used religious rituals and numerology to manipulate women. The complainant accused Kharat of drugging and sexually assaulting her between 2022 and December 2025. Following a raid on Kharat’s office in Nashik, the Nashik Crime Branch seized 58 objectionable video clips, suspected to involve high-profile individuals.
Kharat was arrested by the Nashik Crime Branch and remanded to police custody until March 24. Senior Police Inspector Anchal Mudgal anticipates more victims will come forward as the investigation progresses. The Maharashtra government has formed a Special Investigation Team, led by IPS officer Tejaswini Satpute, to conduct an impartial inquiry into the matter.
