Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have strongly criticized Maharashtra Samajwadi Party chief and MLA Abu Azmi for his comments on the recent Ghaziabad police encounter. They defended the Uttar Pradesh Police, stating that their unbiased actions against criminals have enhanced safety in the state.
Abu Azmi had raised concerns about the encounter, suggesting religious bias influenced the police operation. He emphasized the need for criminals to face legal proceedings rather than extrajudicial actions, alleging discrimination based on religion in Uttar Pradesh.
In response, BJP Rajya Sabha member Dinesh Sharma supported the UP Police’s conduct and questioned the basis of Azmi’s criticism. He highlighted the police’s role in maintaining public safety and the necessity of swift action in the face of criminal threats.
JDU (U) National Spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad also condemned Azmi’s stance, advocating for a focus on supporting law enforcement efforts rather than questioning measures against criminals. He urged leaders to prioritize effective crime control over divisive rhetoric.
JD(U) Chief Spokesperson Neeraj Kumar rejected the idea that encounters are linked to religion, emphasizing that criminality transcends social and religious boundaries. He called for an end to politicizing criminal incidents and urged a unified approach to maintaining law and order.
The discussions arose following the encounter of Asad, the main suspect in the murder of Surya Pratap Chauhan. Asad was fatally shot during a police operation, sparking a heated debate on the appropriate handling of criminal cases.
