A Nepali national named Amrit Jha, who was detained by Iranian security forces close to the Strait of Hormuz, has been freed, as confirmed by the Nepali government. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that a local court in Iran issued an order for Jha’s release, with efforts underway to bring him back to Nepal through diplomatic channels.
Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal acknowledged the news, stating that Nepali authorities are actively engaged in ensuring Jha’s safe return. Jha, believed to have been part of a crew detained from Qeshm Island, near the strategic waterway, was working as a seaman in the region.
The Nepali government expressed gratitude towards the United Arab Emirates for granting clemency to 128 Nepali prisoners during Ramadan. This act was seen as a positive reflection of the strong bilateral ties between Nepal and the UAE, with the decision made following a formal request from the Nepali government through its embassy in Abu Dhabi.
