The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026 will be implemented from May 1, 2026, aiming to regulate e-sports and online social games for user safety and industry development. These rules will introduce a clear registration system, user safety requirements, and mechanisms for grievance redressal. The move signifies a significant step in the governance of online gaming in India, providing much-needed clarity to a rapidly expanding sector.
The regulations will differentiate between permissible e-sports and social games and online money games based on specific criteria like stake payments, monetary winnings expectations, revenue models, and in-game asset monetization. Service providers will need to display registration details, appoint a contact person, adhere to data retention rules, and facilitate payments as directed. Successful registration will result in a digital Certificate of Registration valid for up to 10 years.
The new framework is expected to facilitate responsible growth in the gaming industry, positioning India as a reputable voice in global digital policy. By enforcing strong safeguards and clear guidelines, the sector is poised for safe and sustainable expansion. In 2024, the online gaming sector in India generated Rs 232 billion, with a significant portion coming from transaction-based games. Projections suggest a 11% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), with revenues expected to reach Rs 316 billion by 2027.
