A criminal was shot dead during a police encounter at a checkpost in Jammu district. The incident occurred when the criminal, identified as Abhineet Singh, along with an associate, opened fire on the police team at the Miran Sahib area late Sunday night. Singh, a member of the Nagi gang with a criminal record involving multiple serious offenses, attempted to evade the police checkpoint.
Police, acting on specific information about the accused’s movements, set up the checkpost and intensified surveillance in the area. Upon being signaled to stop, Singh and his associate resorted to firing at the police before fleeing the scene, leaving behind their motorcycle. Despite the escape attempt, the police managed to track down Singh in an injured state near a canal, where he later succumbed to his injuries at Government Medical College Jammu.
Gang conflicts driven by power struggles in illegal activities like smuggling and drug trade have been a persistent issue in Jammu. While law enforcement efforts have significantly reduced criminal gang activities in the city, some groups remain active on the outskirts.
