Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) reveals a significant contradiction in Islamabad’s stance on Kashmir. While advocating for “self-determination” globally, Pakistan has set up a political system in PoK that essentially leads to only one outcome—alignment with Pakistan. Since 1947, PoK has faced political restrictions, economic neglect, and heavy reliance on Islamabad and Rawalpindi for governance.
Pakistan has been actively propagating against India on the Kashmir issue, portraying PoK as a region with full autonomy and freedom. However, ground realities paint a different picture, as highlighted by a report from the International Centre for Peace Studies. The report emphasized that PoK has been under Pakistani control since 1947, with ongoing protests against oppression resulting in casualties and injuries.
Recent mass protests in PoK, now in their second week, have been met with authorities invoking anti-terror laws against demonstrators. The report noted that around 150 protesters have been labeled as ‘terrorists,’ indicating a harsh crackdown on dissent. The region is facing an internet and communications blackout imposed by Pakistan’s military-controlled state machinery, disrupting essential supplies and exacerbating civilian hardships.
Pakistan’s approach in PoK has been likened to “settler colonialism,” deliberately keeping the region impoverished while denying residents basic rights. Despite abundant resources, locals do not benefit, with resources like electricity being diverted to other Pakistani provinces. This unequal distribution of resources has led to economic disparities and challenges for PoK residents.
