Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee a happy birthday, praying for her good health and long life. This gesture has been a consistent practice by the Prime Minister over the past few years, as he never misses an opportunity to extend his wishes to Mamata Banerjee on her special day. The birthday greetings from PM Modi come amidst a bit of confusion regarding the Chief Minister’s actual date of birth, which she herself brought up last year.
Mamata Banerjee, who became the Chief Minister of West Bengal in 2011, is the first woman to hold this position in the state. She ended the 34-year rule of the Left Front and led her party to victory in two consecutive state Assembly elections in 2016 and 2021. Initially associated with the Congress party, she later formed her own party, the Trinamool Congress. Over the years, Mamata Banerjee has been actively involved in various protest movements against the previous Left Front government in West Bengal.
In her 1995 memoir ‘Ekante’, Mamata Banerjee mentioned her birth during Durga Puja, which typically falls at the end of September or the beginning of October as per the Hindu calendar. Official records state that Mamata Banerjee was born on January 5, 1955, making her 71 years old as of the recent birthday. The Chief Minister also revealed that her father had mistakenly extended her birth year by five years during her school enrollment, a fact she discovered much later in life.
