Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the 51st anniversary of the Emergency imposed in 1975 by honoring those who defended democratic values during that challenging period. He emphasized that the Emergency was a direct attack on the Constitution and democratic institutions. PM Modi praised the citizens for their courage and resilience in upholding constitutional values despite the difficult circumstances.
Highlighting the significance of the Constitution, the Prime Minister stated that it symbolizes the aspirations, rights, and duties of 140 crore Indians. He reiterated the collective commitment to safeguarding constitutional values and building an India rooted in justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. PM Modi also referred to June 25 as “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas,” acknowledging the challenges faced by Indian democracy during the Emergency.
June 25, 1975, marked the imposition of the Emergency by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, following the President’s proclamation citing “internal disturbance.” The Emergency lasted until March 21, 1977, considered a dark phase in Independent India’s history.
