Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan paid tribute to those who defended democratic values during the 1975 Emergency on Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. This day marks the 51st anniversary of the Emergency declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Radhakrishnan emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles during challenging times. He highlighted how civil liberties were suspended, freedom of expression was restricted, and democratic institutions were weakened during the Emergency. The Vice President urged a renewed commitment to the Constitution’s ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will observe ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ in Bihar, Haryana, and other parts of India to remember the Emergency’s impact. The party plans various events to underscore the effects of the Emergency on democratic institutions and civil liberties. The 1975 Emergency, lasting 21 months, was a period of suspended democratic norms and civil liberties under the Indira Gandhi government, widely criticized as a dark chapter in India’s democracy.
