A recent meeting in Oslo between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Denmark is of great geopolitical importance. This gathering comes at a time when countries are seeking new economic and strategic alliances amidst growing global fragmentation and conflict-driven economic pressures. The summit discussed various topics, including conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, cooperation in sectors like the blue economy, digital infrastructure, climate action, defense, and more.
The meeting follows significant agreements between India and the European Union, as well as with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Analysts view this summit as India’s effort to strengthen ties with northern Europe amid escalating geopolitical competition involving the United States, China, and Russia. Ljubisa Ivanovic, a journalist from Belgrade, noted that India’s engagement with the West is a strategic move to maintain its autonomy in the face of growing US-China tensions.
According to Ivanovic, Prime Minister Modi’s visit could enhance India’s strategic position in northern Europe and deepen its involvement in regional geopolitical affairs. The relationship between India and the Nordic countries is expected to grow stronger, particularly given the strained relations with China and Pakistan, seen as a Chinese proxy. Additionally, Priyajit Debsarkar, a geopolitical analyst, highlighted Europe’s quest for new economic partners and pointed out India’s appeal due to its democratic values and legal framework, offering an alternative to China’s economic model.
