Prakash Chik Baraik, after stepping down from the Rajya Sabha, has also left the Trinamool Congress. He stated that his resignation aligns with the specific mandate of the recent West Bengal Assembly elections. Baraik mentioned that he will now follow the directives of the Chief Minister.
Baraik becomes the third Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member to resign from both the Upper House and the party in the past four days. This trend started with Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and was followed by Sushmita Dev. Baraik’s post-resignation comment about working under the Chief Minister’s guidance has sparked rumors of a potential shift to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Following Baraik’s resignation, the Trinamool Congress’ representation in the Rajya Sabha has decreased from 13 to 10 members. This decline in numbers indicates a growing dissent within the party, with a significant faction of Lok Sabha members already in rebellion. Moreover, a new majority bloc within the Trinamool Congress’ legislative party in the West Bengal Assembly has emerged, positioning itself as the principal opposition.
As the party faces challenges in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, questions arise about the leadership control of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, who serves as the party’s general secretary.
