A recent Public Health Advisory on Extreme Heat/Heatwave, issued by the Ayush vertical under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, emphasizes the importance of adequate hydration and avoiding direct sunlight exposure. The advisory, released in coordination with the Ministry of Ayush, aims to address the escalating temperatures and heatwave conditions across various regions in the country.
The advisory offers comprehensive guidance for different segments of the population, including the general public, vulnerable groups, employees, laborers, and individuals participating in mass gatherings and sports events. It underscores the significance of staying well-hydrated, refraining from direct sun exposure during peak hours, wearing light cotton clothing, and consuming fruits and fluids rich in electrolytes to combat heat stress and related illnesses.
Particular attention is drawn to the heightened vulnerability of specific groups like infants, children, pregnant women, elderly individuals, outdoor workers, and those with chronic conditions like heart disease and hypertension during heatwave situations. The advisory stresses the need for special care and monitoring for these groups to ensure their well-being and safety.
The advisory also outlines precautionary measures for workplaces, public gatherings, and outdoor activities, including the provision of shaded resting areas, regular hydration intervals, worker acclimatization strategies, and education on recognizing symptoms of heat stress. It warns citizens to be vigilant for signs of heat-related illnesses such as dizziness, headache, nausea, altered mental status, high body temperature, dehydration, seizures, and fainting, with heatstroke identified as a critical medical emergency necessitating immediate attention.
