Punjab Cabinet Minister Barinder Goyal voiced Punjab’s concerns and rights during a meeting marking the 50th anniversary of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). Goyal emphasized the long-standing tradition of appointing the Power Member from Punjab and the Irrigation Member from Haryana, expressing worry over recent changes allowing members from anywhere. He also objected to the deployment of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at BBMB complexes, citing Punjab Police’s historical role in dam security.
Goyal highlighted Punjab’s commitment to water sharing despite groundwater losses, stressing the state’s role in maintaining rivers and bearing flood-related losses. He called for Punjab’s priority in water management decisions due to its significant responsibilities. Responding to allegations of lapses by Haryana, Goyal clarified that Haryana had already exhausted its water share and attempted to claim Punjab’s share, which Punjab rightfully opposed.
