Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s offer to meet and resolve the conflict in Ukraine has been turned down by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin, speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, expressed his reluctance to engage in face-to-face discussions with Zelensky. He stated that he currently sees no justification for such a meeting, emphasizing the need to first develop solutions before considering a potential encounter.
Putin mentioned that he had briefly reviewed Zelensky’s letter, which he described as containing elements of rudeness. The Russian President questioned whether the letter aimed to facilitate negotiations or create obstacles to any potential meeting. Putin reiterated his stance that military actions in Ukraine will continue until their objectives are achieved, expressing confidence that the conflict will eventually come to an end.
Zelensky, in his open letter, proposed a meeting to end the war through direct engagement. He suggested involving Switzerland, Turkey, and Arab countries in hosting these discussions to address and resolve the ongoing issues. The Ukrainian President emphasized the importance of not delaying action until the conflict in Europe garners widespread attention once again.
