The Rajasthan OBC Commission will conduct a door-to-door survey of Other Backward Class (OBC) families across the state starting Friday. This survey aims to assess the reservation needs for the upcoming Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Body elections. The survey is set to run until July 23, following which the Commission will compile its findings for submission to the state government.
The State Election Commission is anticipated to unveil the election schedule only after receiving and reviewing the report from the OBC Commission. This is crucial as the finalization of OBC reservation quotas is a prerequisite for conducting the polls. The OBC Commission has expressed concerns to the state government regarding potential disruptions to the survey caused by the ongoing transfer of government employees.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, the Commission highlighted that ongoing transfers, permitted until Friday, could impact the survey process. The transfer of employees, including those engaged in survey duties, could impede the progress of the survey and delay the submission of the report. Acting in compliance with directives from the Supreme Court, the Commission is responsible for formulating recommendations on OBC reservation for the upcoming elections to Panchayati Raj institutions and Urban Local Bodies.
The Commission is expected to present its report by the second week of August. Following the report’s submission, the State Election Commission is likely to announce the election schedule in late August or September. The elections for both Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Bodies are anticipated to be concluded by November. The Rajasthan High Court had initially instructed the state government to conduct these elections by July 31. However, meeting this deadline now seems challenging due to the necessity of determining OBC reservations based on the Commission’s report.
