The Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh has significantly improved access to Tawang, according to Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein. This tunnel, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 9, 2024, is the world’s longest bi-lane tunnel at an altitude of 13,000 feet. It offers all-weather connectivity to the Tawang region, located near the India-China (Tibet)-Bhutan tri-junction.
Mein emphasized the importance of the Sela Tunnel in social media posts, highlighting its role in ensuring year-round safe transit and enhancing the mobility of the armed forces. He noted that the tunnel, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), is part of a broader infrastructure initiative that has strengthened connectivity in the Northeast. Improved roads, modern infrastructure, and upgraded railway stations are bringing the region closer together.
The Deputy Chief Minister praised the transformative impact of enhanced accessibility on economic opportunities, tourism, and overall development in the region. He acknowledged the historic transformation the Northeast has undergone in the past 12 years, emphasizing the region’s emergence as a key player in India’s development narrative. Mein also commended the sustained focus and investments made by Prime Minister Modi in unlocking the region’s potential and integrating it into India’s development journey.
Mein highlighted the significant progress in railway electrification, household electrification, airport development, and railway expansion in the Northeast. He mentioned the expansion of broad-gauge railway connectivity and the achievements in rail electrification in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, and Mizoram. The Deputy Chief Minister underscored the government’s commitment to transforming the Northeast into a major growth engine through enhanced connectivity and inclusive progress.
