Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Mahesh Dixit has been appointed as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), taking over from the agency’s current Chief Tapan Kumar Deka. Dixit, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, will serve a two-year term from assuming office or until further orders.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved Dixit’s appointment. He previously served as the Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau and is recognized for his expertise in intelligence gathering and internal security operations. Dixit notably led the Intelligence Bureau’s Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau in Srinagar, overseeing operations in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.
With a background in counter-terrorism, Dixit has handled various sensitive assignments within the Intelligence Bureau. His responsibilities have included combating infiltration networks supported by Pakistan, monitoring radicalization activities, and addressing threats related to Left-Wing Extremism. The Intelligence Bureau, operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is India’s primary internal security and counter-intelligence agency.
