At least seven Bangladeshi nationals were detained near the India-Bangladesh border in Assam’s Sribhumi district, raising concerns about border surveillance. The detention occurred at Manatoli village under the Mahishasan border belt when members of the Village Defence Party (VDP) intercepted the group during a routine patrol.

The VDP personnel became suspicious after observing the individuals moving in the border area and promptly informed the authorities. It was revealed through a preliminary inquiry that the seven individuals had crossed into Indian territory from Bangladesh’s Deutali border before being apprehended. They were subsequently handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) and the local police for further verification and legal action.

The incident has highlighted potential gaps in border management, as the same group had been returned to Bangladesh by authorities on December 19. Their reentry into Indian territory within a short period has raised concerns about the effectiveness of border surveillance and enforcement. Security agencies are expected to investigate whether there were monitoring lapses or vulnerabilities along the border that were exploited by the individuals.

Authorities consider the Mahishasan border belt a sensitive area due to its porous terrain and frequent illegal crossing attempts. There is an emphasis on enhancing vigilance and coordination among security forces and local defense units to prevent such incidents. Police are conducting further investigations to determine the intentions of the detained individuals and whether they received any local assistance. Strengthening surveillance measures along the international border remains crucial to prevent illegal infiltration and maintain regional security.
