Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre and three others were arrested for allegedly assaulting doctors and hospital staff at a municipal hospital in Maharashtra’s Kalyan, as seen in CCTV footage. Assistant Commissioner of Police Suhas Hemade confirmed the arrest of the four accused, including Mhatre, in connection with the assault incident.
The altercation occurred when relatives of a female patient, who was at Shastri Nagar Hospital, clashed with the medical staff over her treatment. The accused individuals reportedly misbehaved, physically attacked the doctors, and issued threats during the confrontation. Dr. Vaibhav Salunkhe, a female doctor, along with a nurse, were among those targeted in the assault.
Maharashtra Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat condemned the violence, emphasizing that regardless of party affiliation, assaulting medical professionals is unacceptable. He called for proper treatment of patients while urging against supporting the corporator’s actions, emphasizing the need for legal procedures to be followed in response to the incident.
The incident’s video footage circulated widely, sparking outrage among healthcare workers and the public. Various healthcare organizations demanded strict repercussions for the perpetrators, highlighting the unequivocal condemnation of violence against healthcare workers in any circumstance. Despite denying the allegations of physical assault, Mhatre defended his actions as an attempt to address concerns for the patient’s well-being.
