A Shiv Sena corporator from Kalyan-Dombivli, Ramesh Mhatre, is facing scrutiny after CCTV footage showed him and his supporters assaulting doctors and hospital staff at a municipal hospital in Maharashtra’s Kalyan on July 6. The incident, captured on hospital cameras, occurred following a caesarean delivery where doctors recommended shifting the newborn to another facility for specialized care due to a medical complication.
Hospital officials stated that the altercation arose when the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was full, and the doctors advised transferring the infant. The doctors alleged that Mhatre and his supporters arrived at the hospital, leading to a confrontation where the doctors were verbally abused and physically attacked. The incident, condemned by medical professionals and the public, has sparked demands for strict action against the perpetrators.
Despite the backlash, Mhatre denied physically assaulting the doctor, claiming he only slapped her phone to get her attention. He defended his actions as being in the interest of the patient and child, expressing no remorse for the incident. Shiv Sena MP and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s son, Shrikant Shinde, strongly condemned the assault and promised strict action against those responsible.
