Shreyas Iyer, brought in as a replacement for Tilak Varma in the ongoing T20 series against New Zealand, will continue with the team for the upcoming matches. He is set to travel with the squad to Visakhapatnam and then Thiruvananthapuram for the last two games of the five-match series.
Iyer stepped in for Varma initially for the first three matches, with Varma undergoing surgery in Rajkot due to an injury sustained during a Vijay Hazare match. Varma, currently undergoing rehab in Bengaluru, will join the team for the T20 World Cup once fully recovered.
The BCCI confirmed that Varma is progressing well with his rehabilitation but will need more time to regain full match fitness, ruling him out of the final two T20Is against New Zealand. Iyer will continue as Varma’s replacement for the remaining matches, as per the Men’s Selection Committee’s recommendation.
Despite being the vice-captain in ODIs, Iyer has not featured in the playing XI for the ongoing T20 series, where India has already secured a 3-0 lead. His last T20I appearance dates back to December 2023.
