The renowned Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple in Ujjain has seen a significant financial growth, with a revenue of about Rs 144.14 crore in the current fiscal year 2025-26. This rise in earnings showcases the temple’s increasing popularity as a top pilgrimage destination in India, particularly after the launch of Mahakal Lok in 2022.
The temple’s administration revealed that the highest earnings came from the sale of laddu prasad, amounting to around Rs 65 crore. Following closely were donations collected through hundis, totaling Rs 62 crore. Additional notable revenue sources included Rs 5.5 crore from the cash counter, Rs 3.6 crore from online donations, Rs 3 crore from fields, and Rs 3.8 crore from direct cash collections.
The surge in income is directly linked to the rise in visitors after the establishment of Mahakal Lok. Previously, the temple attracted an average of 50,000 devotees daily. However, post the development project, there has been a substantial increase in daily footfall, leading to higher donations and prasad sales.
The temple premises have undergone significant expansion, growing from 2.82 hectares to nearly 47 hectares. This expansion has allowed for enhanced infrastructure, security, and amenities for pilgrims. Donation trends in recent years have shown a consistent upward trajectory, with contributions increasing from Rs 38.91 crore in 2022-23 to Rs 59.91 crore in 2023-24, and then to Rs 51.22 crore in 2024-25.
The current fiscal year has already surpassed previous donation records, indicating continued enthusiasm among devotees. Alongside the rise in revenue, expenditures on devotee facilities, security, maintenance, and staff welfare have also increased. The temple presently employs 306 staff members to ensure smooth operations.
The Mahakaleshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, attracts millions of pilgrims annually. The growing revenue is being reinvested in further development to enhance the devotee experience while upholding the sanctity of the ancient shrine. Officials anticipate that the financial figures for 2025-26 will continue to rise as the fiscal year progresses.
