The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur, West Bengal, has made another arrest, bringing the total arrests to two. The first suspect was apprehended on Sunday, and both will appear in court on Monday for custody hearings.
Authorities have chosen not to disclose the identities of the arrested individuals until their court appearance. Additionally, three other individuals have been taken into custody for questioning in connection with the case. Following interrogation of the initial suspect, crucial information was provided, leading to further arrests and detentions after extensive search operations.
The victim’s body was discovered in a pond on Sunday morning after she had been missing since Saturday, sparking tension in the area. Allegations of a related death due to mob violence have also surfaced. A six-member SIT has been established to handle the investigation.
While the family asserts that the girl was raped and murdered, law enforcement has yet to confirm these claims. The autopsy was completed on Sunday night, with the police awaiting the report to determine the motive behind the crime and whether sexual assault occurred. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has promised a thorough inquiry into the incident after speaking with the victim’s father.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has accused authorities of deploying a significant police presence outside the residences of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee in South Kolkata, alleging it was a deliberate attempt to prevent them from visiting Baruipur and meeting the victim’s family.
