South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back highlighted the country’s efforts to bolster its defense capabilities and strengthen ties with the United States. He expressed concerns about North Korean threats and uncertainties stemming from Middle East tensions during a defense forum in Singapore. Ahn pointed out the need to enhance security in the Indo-Pacific region due to North Korea’s military buildup and advancements in nuclear and missile capabilities.
Ahn underscored South Korea’s commitment to fortifying its self-reliant defense capabilities while deepening its alliance with the US. He mentioned the country’s focus on advancing its three-axis defense system and reinforcing US extended deterrence to address evolving security challenges effectively. The three-axis deterrence system includes the KAMD missile shield system, the Kill Chain preemptive strike platform, and the Korea Massive Punishment and Retaliation system.
In response to changing warfare dynamics, South Korea is developing a “smart military” by incorporating artificial intelligence-based systems and drone technologies. Ahn emphasized the country’s determination to take a more proactive role in defending the Korean Peninsula through these technological advancements. Additionally, he reiterated South Korea’s commitment to pursuing dialogue with North Korea for peaceful coexistence and security.
Ahn also highlighted South Korea’s support for ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz amid tensions between the US and Iran. He emphasized the country’s dedication to upholding freedom of navigation in key sea lanes in accordance with international law. South Korea is actively considering measures to contribute to these security efforts based on its legal requirements and other relevant factors.
