With the southwest monsoon approaching Kerala, millions in India are anticipating relief from the summer heat along with warnings of heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department has predicted a significant increase in rainfall activity across the state, signaling the onset of the monsoon.
The monsoon’s arrival over Kerala is a crucial indicator for its progression across the country, closely monitored nationwide. Orange alerts have been issued for seven districts in Kerala, including Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Pathanamthitta, and Kozhikode, urging residents to stay vigilant due to anticipated intense rain spells.
Weather experts caution that certain areas in these districts may experience 11 to 20 centimeters of rainfall in short durations, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides. Disaster management agencies are intensifying monitoring and preparedness efforts to mitigate these risks.
Yellow alerts have also been issued for additional districts, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall across large parts of the state. As the monsoon nears, rough sea conditions and strong winds are expected along Kerala’s coastline, prompting authorities to advise fishermen against venturing into the sea until conditions improve.
Local bodies in Kerala are ramping up pre-monsoon preparations, including cleaning drains and waterways, to reduce flooding risks. The upcoming monsoon showers are anticipated to transform Kerala’s landscape, marking the beginning of seasonal rains crucial for agriculture and water resources across India.
