The fallout from a distant Iran war has tragically resulted in the death of a student of Indian descent in Texas. Savitha Shan, along with another student, was fatally shot by a man wearing Iranian symbols outside a popular venue in Austin. The shooter, identified as Ndiaga Diagne, an immigrant from Senegal, was wearing a T-shirt with the Iranian flag and a shirt with “Property of Allah” inscribed on it.
Officials have expressed concerns about a potential terrorism connection, with FBI Acting Special Agent Alex Doran mentioning signs of a link to terrorism in the 53-year-old shooter. This incident has put law enforcement agencies across the US on high alert due to heightened terrorism fears following recent US and Israel military actions against Iran. FBI Director Kash Patel has instructed counterterrorism and intelligence teams to be vigilant.
University of Texas President Jim Davis confirmed Shan’s tragic death, describing her as a student with aspirations to make a positive impact on the world. Shan, a 21-year-old student pursuing dual degrees in economics and management information systems, was actively involved in various activities, including volunteering and running an e-commerce business. The shooting, which took place early Sunday morning, involved the shooter opening fire outside a beer garden in Austin before being neutralized by the police.
