The Supreme Court rejected a plea for a court-monitored investigation into the death of a youth in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar during Holi celebrations. The Court advised the petitioner to approach the Delhi Police Commissioner with their concerns first. Emphasizing the professionalism of the Delhi Police, the Court suggested addressing grievances through proper channels before seeking court intervention.
The plea, alleging the incident as a case of “mob lynching,” demanded a probe, security for the victim’s family, and a compensation of Rs 5 crore. The situation arose from a dispute during Holi festivities, escalating into a violent clash resulting in the victim’s fatal injuries. The National Human Rights Commission has also taken note of the incident, directing authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice for the victim’s family.
The NHRC’s directives include identifying and prosecuting all involved, preserving evidence like CCTV footage, and submitting an Action Taken Report within two weeks. The Court granted the petitioner liberty to approach the Delhi High Court if their grievances are not addressed by the police. The incident, if proven true, raises concerns of human rights violations and the need for a fair investigation to deliver justice.
