Tamil Nadu has recorded the highest number of dengue cases in India in 2025, totaling 20,866 cases and 12 deaths between January and November. The state’s effective disease surveillance and reporting system have helped in early detection and medical intervention, keeping the mortality rate relatively low.
In comparison, Kerala reported 10,239 cases and 49 deaths, while Andhra Pradesh had 2,384 cases and five deaths. Telangana saw 8,139 cases but no deaths, and Karnataka reported 6,759 cases with zero fatalities during the same period.
Over the past five years, Tamil Nadu has seen a consistent increase in reported dengue cases. The state had 27,378 cases and 13 deaths in 2024, marking a significant spike from previous years. Health officials credit the low mortality rate to early diagnosis, close monitoring, and immediate treatment protocols.
Dr. Janani Sankar, the Medical Director, mentioned a decline in dengue cases since late December, with a shift towards other illnesses like typhoid and respiratory infections due to winter conditions. Dr. S. Chandrasekar from Government Stanley Medical College Hospital noted that mosquito breeding decreases in winter, reducing dengue cases but emphasized the importance of maintaining safe water storage practices.
Health authorities emphasize the ongoing need for public vigilance and preventive measures, highlighting that even as dengue cases decrease, prevention remains crucial.
