Veteran leader Tapas Roy, a six-time legislator, is set to become the pro-tem Speaker in the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday. Governor R.N. Ravi will administer the oath of office to Roy for this role. Roy will oversee the oath ceremony for the 293 newly elected legislators from the recent Assembly polls on May 13 and May 14.
The Election Commission of India decided to conduct repolling for the Falta Assembly constituency due to electoral malpractices, reducing the current number of legislators to 293 out of 294 constituencies. The repolling for Falta is scheduled for May 21, with results to be declared on May 24. Roy, as the pro-tem Speaker, will manage the proceedings until a regular Speaker is elected.
Tapas Roy, the most senior legislator among the BJP MLAs, is expected to take on the role of Speaker for the BJP in the Assembly. His political journey began in 1996 as a Congress MLA and later transitioned to the Trinamool Congress. Roy has been re-elected multiple times and recently won as a BJP candidate from the Maniktala Assembly constituency.
