Thousands of devotees gathered at the shrine in Wangat village of Ganderbal district in J&K for the annual Urs of Sufi saint Hazrat Mian Nizamuddin Kiyanvi. Devotees from various districts and even outside the region participated in the prayers before heading back home. Traffic authorities faced challenges managing the influx of devotees arriving via different modes of transport.
Food and ‘Halwa’ were served at the saint’s ‘Langar’ in Wangat Sharif during the Urs. Mian Altaf Ahmad, the grandson and Custodian of the shrine, led the final day’s prayers. He expressed gratitude to devotees for their participation in the Urs celebrations. Mian Altaf highlighted that the saint originally belonged to Kianya Sharif, Athmuqam, in the Neelam Valley.
The day commemorates the annual Urs of Mian Nizamuddin Kiyanvi, with historical records mentioning Maharaja Partap Singh’s visit to the saint in Kianya Sharif. Mian Altaf emphasized the significance of Baba Zee Sahib, his great-grandfather, in the saint’s legacy. The Urs included nightlong recitations of the Holy Quran and ‘Durud,’ concluding with final prayers. Mian Altaf clarified that the Urs festivities were non-political, focusing solely on religious aspects.
