At least three individuals lost their lives in Delhi’s Rohini Sector 16 when an under-construction building collapsed, with one person sustaining injuries. The incident occurred post heavy rainfall in the city. The Delhi Fire Services were alerted about the collapse around 4:20 p.m., prompting the dispatch of four fire tenders to the scene.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other emergency services quickly arrived at the site, where local residents also pitched in to aid the rescue efforts. During the operation, a 42-year-old named Ram Kishore was rescued from the debris but was pronounced dead upon reaching the hospital. Another worker, Ravi, 35, was safely rescued, while concerns lingered about the building owner, Ram Dua, and several trapped laborers. Delhi Police initiated legal action against the building owner.
Residents, upon hearing the collapse, rushed to the location and began clearing debris manually to assist those trapped underneath. Videos circulating on social media depicted the joint efforts of locals and emergency responders, showcasing the removal of heavy concrete slabs and bricks. Specialized equipment, including hydraulic cutters, was utilized to cautiously lift concrete slabs to prevent further harm to those trapped.
In response to the emergency, the Delhi Police requested heavy machinery such as private JCB machines and two Hydra cranes to expedite debris removal and rescue operations. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall persisted in Delhi, leading to waterlogging in various areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts, cautioning about thunderstorms and additional rainfall in the coming hours. Notably, regions like Sadar Bazar, Nasirpur, Greater Kailash, and others experienced severe waterlogging, with pedestrians navigating knee-deep water in some locations.
