A tragic road accident near Jejuri in Maharashtra’s Pune has deeply impacted the ongoing Ashadhi Ekadashi pilgrimage, resulting in the deaths of three women Warkaris and injuries to around 16 to 18 others. The victims were part of the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi procession en route to Pandharpur when the accident occurred at Bhongale Mala in the Jejuri area.
The accident involved a truck carrying provisions for the pilgrimage group, which lost control and collided with a tempo carrying devotees, as well as hitting several Warkaris walking ahead. Three women devotees lost their lives on the spot, while 16 to 18 others sustained injuries, with three reported to be in critical condition and receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
The deceased women, identified as Rajashree Shankar Bhosale, Madhavi Rajaram Sarwade, and Nanda Pawar, all hailed from the Sangli district. The truck responsible for the accident was registered in Nanded. Authorities are investigating the incident, with Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy and emphasizing the collective responsibility for the safety of pilgrims on their journey to Pandharpur.
Speaking to the media, Purandar MLA Vijay Shivtare disclosed that the 70-year-old truck driver had taken medication for a fever before driving, which led to drowsiness and the subsequent loss of control. Meanwhile, MLA Rohit Pawar extended condolences and urged a thorough investigation into the accident to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure the safety of all Warkaris participating in the pilgrimage.
