The Trinamool Congress has taken legal action against an Election Commission of India-appointed police observer for allegedly holding a clandestine meeting with a BJP candidate in South 24 Parganas district before the second phase of Assembly polls in West Bengal. The petition filed by the Trinamool Congress claimed that the police observer, Mr Parmar Smit Parshomttamdas, breached neutrality by meeting the BJP candidate, Gour Ghosh, secretly. Despite being assigned accommodation in South Kolkata, the police observer stayed at a different location where the alleged meeting occurred.

The petition also alleged that the police observer’s conduct, captured on CCTV, violated election observer norms, compromising neutrality and transparency. Trinamool Congress emphasized the importance of observers maintaining independence to ensure fair elections. The party, led by Abhishek Banerjee, a General Secretary and Lok Sabha member, decided to approach the Calcutta High Court regarding this matter, seeking a judicial inquiry into the incident.
