Jahangir Khan, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) nominee from the Falta Assembly seat, has pulled out of the electoral race just two days before the repolls. Khan, a close associate of Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, cited public interest as the reason for his withdrawal. He emphasized his commitment to peace and development in Falta and mentioned the special package provided by the West Bengal Chief Minister for the constituency.
Khan clarified that he did not engage in any wrongdoing during the initial polls and distanced himself from the violence that occurred in the area. Meanwhile, the ruling BJP seized upon Khan’s withdrawal, making references to ‘Lyari’ and criticizing the TMC for alleged muscle-flexing. The BJP spokesperson linked Khan and other TMC leaders to antisocial activities in Falta, hinting at a potential reopening of past criminal cases against them.
The Falta constituency in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, is set for repolls on May 21 following the Election Commission’s decision to annul the previous elections due to electoral violations, including violence and voter intimidation.
