The All India Trinamool Congress has revealed its four candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, sparking varied reactions. Babul Supriyo, Rajeev Kumar, Menaka Guruswamy, and Koel Mallick have been nominated by the party. Trinamool MLA Asit Mazumdar hinted at more to come beyond this initial announcement.
The BJP’s Dilip Ghosh noted that individuals like Rajeev Kumar, who supported Mamata Banerjee during challenging times, were expected to be recognized. Babul Supriyo, a recent Trinamool entrant, currently serves as a minister in Mamata Banerjee’s Cabinet. Rajeev Kumar, a former Director General of Police, and Menaka Guruswamy, a prominent Supreme Court advocate, are also among the nominees.
The Election Commission has scheduled the polling for 37 Rajya Sabha seats, including those in West Bengal, for March 16. The Trinamool, with a significant majority in the West Bengal Assembly, is well-positioned to secure the election of its four candidates. In contrast, the BJP’s strength has decreased due to various factors, including resignations and bypoll defeats.
