Tripura’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department, led by Minister Ratan Lal Nath, is ready to handle any drought-like situation, although the state has already received over 1,000 mm of rainfall this season. Minister Nath expressed this readiness after a video conference led by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, focusing on the upcoming Kharif season and the potential impact of El Niño.
The Central government, anticipating a weak monsoon, has heightened its preparedness for agricultural challenges. Minister Chouhan conducted a virtual meeting with Agriculture Ministers from various states, along with officials and experts, to assess the national situation. Nath highlighted the proactive approach of the Union Agriculture Minister in ensuring food grain self-sufficiency and alerting states to potential drought risks.
Despite concerns about El Niño effects in some regions, Tripura seems unlikely to face a drought based on current forecasts and the substantial rainfall received so far. Minister Nath emphasized that the state is well-equipped to manage any unexpected circumstances that may arise. The Agriculture Department has been instructed to ensure adequate supplies of seeds, fertilizers, and equipment to support Kharif crop cultivation and boost productivity.
To enhance agricultural output, the focus is on promoting cluster-based cultivation of crops like paddy, oil seeds, and pulses to improve efficiency and management. Additionally, preparations are underway to provide timely irrigation support and implement contingency plans to protect crop yields. Minister Nath reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and ensuring a smooth cropping season.
