Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath revealed that 95% of the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded power distribution strengthening work in the state is finished, with the rest expected to be completed by June. Minister Nath, after a meeting with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, mentioned that smart meter installations across the state will be finalized by October this year.
The Minister highlighted that Tripura’s current peak electricity demand is 542 MW, with 365 MW available locally and 177 MW sourced from the market due to insufficient natural gas supply. He credited Central Government assistance for reducing Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses from 40% to 18.23%. Nath also noted the rapid progress of smart meter installations in compliance with the Centre’s directives.
Nath announced the state’s pioneering initiative of introducing prepaid meters on a large scale, with over 3,55,158 consumers already connected. He emphasized the completion of various power sector projects, including the RDSS loss-reduction works and the upcoming 120 MW combined-cycle gas turbine project at Rukhia. Additionally, rooftop solar power systems with a capacity of 12.11 MW have been installed under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
