President Donald Trump has announced that the United States is contemplating reducing its troops in Germany, with a decision expected in the near future. This comes after Trump criticized European allies for their lack of support in the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s administration is considering penalizing certain NATO members deemed uncooperative during the Iran war.
More than 36,000 US troops are currently stationed in Germany, where signs of tension have surfaced over the Iran conflict. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently expressed concerns about the US strategy in negotiations with Iran, prompting a response from Trump on social media. Despite the exchange of sharp rhetoric, Merz stated that his relationship with Trump remains positive.
During the ongoing conflict with Iran, Trump has been vocal in his criticism of NATO members for not providing naval assistance in securing the Strait of Hormuz. He referred to NATO as “cowards” and warned of repercussions for their lack of support. Additionally, Trump called out South Korea for not being helpful in the US military campaign against North Korea, where 28,500 US troops are stationed as a deterrent.
