The Centre has given the green light for Tushar Mehta’s re-appointment as the Solicitor General of India for an additional three-year term starting from July 1, 2026. Mehta, who initially assumed office in October 2018 after serving as an Additional Solicitor General, has been granted extensions twice before this. With this renewal, he is on track to become one of the longest-serving law officers in the nation’s history, having already completed around eight years in the role.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has also extended the tenures of five Additional Solicitors General (ASGs) for the Supreme Court. Vikramjit Banerjee and K.M. Nataraj’s re-appointments will be effective from July 1, 2026, while S.V. Raju, N. Venkataraman, and Aishwarya Bhati will continue in their roles from June 30, 2026. Additionally, Chetan Sharma’s term as Additional Solicitor General for the Delhi High Court has been prolonged for another six months starting July 1, 2026.
Mehta, during his tenure as Solicitor General, has been instrumental in representing the Union government in various significant constitutional, policy, and criminal cases before the Supreme Court and different High Courts.
