After the impressive performance in the recent Kerala local body polls, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has decided to include former two-time MLA P.V. Anvar, tribal leader C.K. Janu, and Vishnupuram Chandrasekheran’s VSDP as associate members of the coalition. This move signals an early effort to expand its political reach before the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. The VSDP and Janu’s party were previously part of the BJP-led NDA but have distanced themselves from the BJP. Anvar, on the other hand, was a Left-backed Independent MLA before parting ways with the CPI-M.
The decision to admit these new members was made during a high-level UDF meeting, where there was consensus on the importance of early election readiness, including expediting discussions on seat-sharing. The UDF leaders have committed to finalizing seat-sharing agreements by January, well in advance of the elections expected to take place in April-May. This proactive approach contrasts with past practices of last-minute negotiations that often led to internal conflicts.
The meeting emphasized the necessity of organizational clarity and political unity as the UDF gears up to challenge the ruling CPI-M-led Left Democratic Front (LDF). Additionally, the UDF deliberated on its stance towards the Kerala Congress-Mani, the third-largest party in the LDF.
It was decided that the UDF would not actively engage with the Mani faction unless approached by the party itself for discussions on a potential political realignment. The door, however, remains open for dialogue if Kerala Congress-Mani expresses interest in exploring a change in its political alignment.
Kerala Congress-Mani, previously aligned with the UDF, switched allegiance to the LDF after the 2020 local body elections, significantly impacting the political landscape in central Kerala. Since then, the party has become a crucial ally of the CPI-M.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of Kerala Congress-M clarifying its position amidst ongoing political speculations. UDF leaders stressed the need for a clear strategy based on transparency rather than ambiguity.
With the inclusion of Anvar, Janu, and Chandrasekheran, along with a renewed focus on early seat-sharing discussions, the UDF aims to demonstrate unity and readiness as it seeks to regain political momentum against the ruling Left in the lead-up to the Assembly elections.
