Students in universities and colleges across Uttar Pradesh could soon be required to wear uniforms following a directive from Governor Anandiben Patel. The aim is to instill discipline, ensure uniformity on campuses, and emphasize vocational education, student safety, and teacher accountability.
The proposal has evoked mixed reactions among students, with some raising concerns about personal freedom and students’ rights. An LLB student at the University of Lucknow highlighted that no major public university in the country has enforced a uniform policy to date.
Expressing apprehensions about the impact on campus freedom, another student acknowledged that compliance with any government order would be necessary. However, the imposition of uniforms could potentially restrict students’ freedom, according to the student.
Mukul Srivastava, a Professor at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Lucknow, mentioned that there has been no official communication received regarding the proposal. He stated that they became aware of the Chancellor’s statement through the media and will act accordingly once an official order is issued.
The introduction of compulsory dress codes in higher educational institutions across Uttar Pradesh is likely to trigger a broader discussion within academic circles on issues such as discipline, equality, and individual freedom.
