Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has granted approval for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the high-profile murder of 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari. This decision follows the heartfelt plea from Ankita’s grieving parents and the recent public outcry in the state due to leaked audio clips and suspicions of VIP involvement.
Ankita Bhandari, employed as a receptionist near Rishikesh, disappeared in September 2022. Subsequently, her body was discovered, leading to the arrest of Pulkit Arya, the resort owner, and two others. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a female IPS officer was established by the state government, ensuring a thorough investigation that resulted in the denial of bail to all accused and the filing of a chargesheet.
In May 2025, a lower court convicted the three individuals, sentencing them to life imprisonment. Chief Minister Dhami emphasized the government’s impartial and sensitive handling of the case, guaranteeing legal representation and justice. He underscored the administration’s commitment to transparency and fairness throughout the process.
The recent resurgence of the case in the national spotlight was triggered by leaked audio clips on social media, prompting additional FIRs and ongoing inquiries. Responding to escalating public demands, including mass protests advocating for a CBI investigation to explore potential VIP connections, Ankita’s parents met with CM Dhami to formally request CBI involvement.
Describing Ankita as “our sister and daughter,” the Chief Minister expressed the government’s unwavering dedication to ensuring justice in a compassionate and transparent manner. He assured that no evidence or fact would be disregarded in the pursuit of truth. CM Dhami reiterated the state’s commitment to securing complete justice for Ankita Bhandari.
The decision to transfer the case to the CBI reflects the government’s acknowledgment of the family’s wishes and its commitment to addressing all concerns fairly. This step is anticipated to inject new energy into the investigation, offering closure to Ankita’s family and the people of Uttarakhand who have long sought accountability in this tragic incident. The state government has pledged full cooperation with the CBI in the upcoming phases.
