In a setback for Kerala’s ruling CPI-M, veteran leader G. Sudhakaran has declined party Secretary M.V. Govindan’s request to renew his party membership. Despite attempts at reconciliation, Sudhakaran has stood firm on his decision not to renew his membership. Party leaders, including General Secretary M.A. Baby, have tried to accommodate Sudhakaran, while the Congress has responded cautiously.
Sudhakaran, feeling hurt by what he perceived as a sarcastic smile from Govindan at a press conference, has maintained a confrontational stance. In an attempt to resolve the issue, Govindan personally called Sudhakaran to clarify that his smile was not mocking but a response to journalists’ questions. He also urged Sudhakaran to reconsider renewing his party membership.
Despite the direct outreach from the state Secretary, Sudhakaran remains steadfast in his decision not to renew his membership in the CPI-M. This stance has surprised many within the party, although several leaders have adopted a conciliatory approach, indicating a desire to retain him within the party despite the ongoing controversy.
CPI-M’s Alappuzha district secretary R. Naser addressed the situation, noting that while Sudhakaran criticized certain individuals, he did not make any personal remarks against him. Meanwhile, Congress leaders like K. C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala have expressed support for Sudhakaran, highlighting his long-standing service and reputation free of corruption.
