Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan stressed the importance of responsible use of modern technologies like artificial intelligence, urging that scientific progress should align with India’s ethical principles. Speaking at the 39th Convocation Ceremony of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), where over 3.2 lakh learners were awarded degrees, diplomas, and certificates, he highlighted Bharat’s strength in ethical values. Radhakrishnan welcomed the National Education Policy (NEP) and praised IGNOU for introducing flexible undergraduate programs and integrating Indian knowledge systems with modern education.
The Vice President expressed that the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence in education can enhance learning experiences, provide better student support, and enable personalized education. He reassured that embracing modern advancements is essential, citing the positive impact of computers despite initial job loss concerns. Radhakrishnan also launched the IGNOU Alumni Portal with over five million registrations and facilitated easy access to certificates through Digi Locker under the National Academic Depository (NAD).
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, IGNOU Vice-Chancellor Uma Kanjilal, and other dignitaries attended the event. Recognizing IGNOU’s pivotal role in India’s open and distance learning landscape, the Vice President lauded the university for significantly expanding higher education accessibility nationwide. He highlighted IGNOU’s inclusive approach, with over 14 lakh learners, majority being women and from rural or disadvantaged backgrounds, emphasizing its substantial contribution to educational equity, social mobility, and national progress.
