After a delay of over five years, the Villivakkam Lake amusement park project in Chennai is finally moving forward, with encroachments around Annai Sathya Nagar being cleared. This development has sparked optimism among locals in Villivakkam and nearby areas, who see it as a significant recreational addition for the northwestern parts of Chennai. Construction work is progressing steadily, and authorities anticipate the project’s completion by September.
The 39-acre Villivakkam Lake at Sidco Nagar, which was part of the Chennai Smart City Mission in 2018, was initially focused on restoring the water body through desilting and deepening works to enhance water storage capacity. The aim was to bolster flood mitigation efforts and provide better protection to adjacent residential zones during heavy rainfall.
Despite facing delays due to various challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, legal issues before the National Green Tribunal, and disputes over encroachments, the project has evolved into a comprehensive recreational and tourism venture. With an estimated investment of nearly Rs 50 crore, including contributions from private partners, the project aims to offer a range of leisure facilities.
Among the key attractions planned is a 250-meter glass-bottom suspension bridge, situated 41 feet above the lake, offering scenic views of the restored waterbody and its surroundings. Safety assessments have been conducted to manage visitor numbers and ensure structural integrity. The upcoming amusement park will include entertainment options like children’s play areas, gaming zones, a music theater, boating activities, food courts, a mini theater, and a snow-themed feature.
Located near vital transport links, the park is expected to draw visitors from Villivakkam, Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Avadi, Tiruvallur, and neighboring regions, potentially becoming a popular family-friendly destination, especially for middle-income groups. However, concerns persist about the sustainability of combining waterbody restoration with extensive commercial and recreational ventures. Observers emphasize the need for regular maintenance, environmental protections, and safety protocols to secure the project’s long-term success.
